Margaret Melkonian: Executive Director

Margaret Melkonian

Margaret Melkonian is a founding member of the LI Alliance for Peaceful Alternatives and the Vice President of the Hague Appeal for Peace. She was the Program Coordinator for Disarmament and Human Security for the Hague Appeal for Peace Conference in 1999. The Hague Appeal for Peace promotes a global peace education. Ms. Melkonian was the Justice & Peace Coordinator at Catholic Charities from August 2000 to December 2001 and a member of the Justice and Peace Commission of the Rockville Centre Diocese from 1986 to 2001. She is a member of the Pax Christi LI Council and on the executive committee of Peace Action New York State. She was the recipient of the 2007 Gandhi, King, Ikeda Peace Award from Morehouse College.

Ms. Melkonian studied fine arts at Hunter College and is a graduate of Hofstra University. She lives in Uniondale with her husband Martin, who teaches economics at Hofstra University.

Denisse is in her final year at Hofstra University, where she is studying History, Sociology, and Sustainability. She was a part of the Alliance’s first round of Peace Fellows in 2013. She has interned for organizations such as Make the Road New York, The Brotherhood Sister Sol, the Roosevelt Institute, and Everyday Feminism. During the school year, she also works as a fellow with Hofstra’s Center for Civic Engagement, particularly website management and research for the Uniondale Community Land Trust. Denisse is also a Social Change Fellow for the Andrew Goodman Foundation and an associate at Gotham Government Relations.

Tara Hamilton: Intern


Tara is an Elementary/Early Childhood Education and History major at Hofstra University. She was a part of the pilot program of Peace Fellows in 2013 and decided to continue to work with the Alliance during the 2013-2014 school year. She is also treasurer of Hofstra’s chapter of the Roosevelt Institute.
