SUMMARY:Roy Bourgeois: My Journey from Silence to Solidarity
DESCRIPTION:Roy Bourgeois – founder of The School of Americas Watch(soaw.org)\, Vietnam Vet\, and former Maryknoll Priest — has devoted his ministry to social justice and to educating the public about U.S. foreign policy\, particularly in Latin America. He served time as a prisoner of conscience and was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2010.\n \nRoy will review the history of The School of Americas Watch\, and discuss new developments in the fight for social justice in Latin America. He will share how his activism led to another cause: supporting women’s rights to ordination in the Catholic Church. After serving 40 years as a Maryknoll Priest\, he has recently been excommunicated for his public support of women priests: “The problem is not with God\, but with an all-male clerical culture that views women as lesser than men.” *\n \nCome join us to honor and support this beloved leader of the peace movement in his continued journey of speaking truth to power.

SUMMARY:Film Screening: Five Broken Cameras
DESCRIPTION:An extraordinary work of both cinematic and political activism\, 5 Broken Cameras is a deeply personal\, first-hand account of non-violent resistance in Bil’in\, a West Bank village threatened by encroaching Israeli settlements. Shot almost entirely by Palestinian farmer Emad Burnat\, who bought his first camera in 2005 to record the birth of his youngest son\, the footage was later given to Israeli co-director Guy Davidi to edit. Structured around the violent destruction of each one of Burnat’s cameras\, the filmmakers’ collaboration follows one family’s evolution over five years of village turmoil. Burnat watches from behind the lens as olive trees are bulldozed\, protests intensify\, and lives are lost. “I feel like the camera protects me\,” he says\, “but it’s an illusion.”
